A TOTAL of 63 trains were cancelled on Saturday and many were diverted as restoration work is underway in Odisha’s Balasore on Saturday, a day after three trains collided. The accident that involved the Chennai-bound Coromandel Express, the SMVT Bengaluru-Howrah Express and a goods train claimed over 280 lives and left several injured.
“In total, 63 trains were cancelled today (Saturday) and 21 were cancelled yesterday (Friday): Including up and down trains,” said an official spokesperson of the South Eastern Railway. “I came to meet my ailing mother-in-law in Kolkata and was about to board the Howrah ERS Antyodaya Express. But the train has been cancelled and I came to know only after reaching the station. I don’t know what to do now,” said Babu Mondal, who works as a daily labourer in Kochi, Kerala, standing outside the enquiry counter at Howrah railway station.
The trains that have been cancelled include Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, Yeshwantpur-Howrah Express, New Delhi-Puri Express and Anand Vihar-Puri Express journey commencing on June 4. Yog Nagari Rishikesh -Puri Express journey commencing on June 3 will run on diverted route via IB-Jharsuguda Road-Sambalpur, said officials Darbhanga-Kanniyakumari Express journey, Kamakhya-LTT Express remained cancelled.
A passenger, Abhijit Sahu, was seen running from one counter to another looking for options to reach Jaleshwar as his father is unwell. He had booked a ticket on Howrah JER MEMU PASS Special 08061 HWH JER Memu Pass Special train.
“I had no idea that this train had been cancelled. My family in Odisha are waiting for me. I don’t know what options I have. I will wait at the station to see how I can reach there,” he said.
Meanwhile, frequent announcements were made at the Howrah station about cancellation of trains, even as passengers continued to turn up at the station.
